Sean Dyche will not be kept on as Everton manager by The Friedkin Group as players and fans don’t like his style of play, according to Jay Bothroyd.
Earlier this week it was confirmed that the US-based group had completed their takeover of the Toffees, with early predictions suggesting that Dyche will initially be kept on by the new owners.
Bothroyd though believes that the 53-year-old now has to prove himself to the Friedkin’s if he is to remain in charge of the club long-term, something he is not convinced he will do.
Speaking on Sky Sports News ahead of Sunday’s (22 December) game between Everton and Chelsea about Dyche’s situation, the one-time England international said:
“He’s on trial. He’s gonna have to prove that he’s the guy for the job. If he doesn’t get Everton performing and playing well then I’m not sure he will be at the club next year.
“It’s been difficult for Sean Dyche because everyone says he’s a long-ball merchant, and when you get labelled as that how many teams really want that, especially if you’re down the bottom of the league all the time. A lot of the Everton fans don’t want to see that.
“Yes they’ve got some good players but they don’t have enough to say they’re an above-mid-table side. But now they’ve got the financial backing I just can’t see Dyche is gonna be there beyond this year.”
That clash with Chelsea saw the Toffees play out a goalless draw, meaning they have now scored just ten goals in their last 12 games, with four of those coming in the same win over Wolves.
They have though also conceded just eight goals over that same period. Even so, it is a style of play that has left some fans calling for Dyche to be sacked this season. Bothroyd has suggested that the Toffees’ squad will not be a fan of how he plays either.
Speaking again on Sky Sports News after full-time at Goodison Park, the former Cardiff and Coventry said (4:23pm):
“Dyche has to stay up and I think Everton will stay up, purely for the fact they’ve got a good defensive record, but in the long run for him to keep his job that’s a different question.
“A lot of the fans don’t like the way Everton play football. I’m sure a lot of the players there don’t as well.”

Football Insider Opinion
In the short-term it makes a lot of sense for Dyche to be kept on by the Friedkin Group after completing their takeover of the club.
Everton are not safe from relegation yet this season so keeping around a manager such as him who knows how to keep clubs in the division seems the right thing to do.
Beyond that though the Friedkin Group are going to have big ambitions for the club to move back up the table to where they once where.
There will be questions about whether they can do that while playing Dyche’s style that is hard to beat, rather than hard to cope with.
As evidenced by some of the reactions to him from the club’s fans this season, the vast majority of people will always prefer to be involved with a more attacking style of play than Dyche employs.
Bothroyd’s suggestion that the Everton squad will not like that set up either may therefore have some credence to it.
All of that puts pressure on Dyche and means that if he does not, or will not, change things, he may not be in charge of the Toffees for more than a few more months when his current deal expires.
In other news, one Everton player was “lucky” not to concede a penalty against Chelsea.
