Ex-FIFA Ref says Anthony Taylor should have stopped play after Tottenham v Chelsea incident

Anthony Taylor should have stopped play during Tottenham’s defeat against Chelsea on Sunday, Keith Hackett has said.

Spurs fans were seen throwing plastic cups towards Cole Palmer in the 4-3 loss on 8 December and Hackett believes the game should have been paused to increase security around the pitch and deliver a warning over the PA system.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, the ex-FIFA referee and former PGMOL chief was surprised that action wasn’t taken at the time.

I am sure that the referee will include the throwing of plastic cups in the 42nd minute at Palmer the Chelsea player,” he said.

“Taylor should have stopped the game and taken the opportunity to speak to the stadium manager and arrange for the increased presence of security in that area. Plus a public warning over the public address system.

Tottenham set for retrospective action from FA?

“Paper cups can easily turn to more dangerous objects if firm action is not taken.”

It was a match full of controversy once again like it always is when Chelsea come to town.

Both Moises Caicedo and Dejan Kulusevski have been told by Hackett that they should have been sent off for individual altercations, but somehow avoided it.

Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be raging with the manner of the defeat, with pressure continuing to rise over his job in North London after another disappointing afternoon.

In other Tottenham news, Daniel Levy has dodged a bullet after a transfer rejection.
