Manchester United agree £4.7m deal as Ruben Amorim’s first signing
Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Diego Leon (Tigo Sports) Manchester United have agreed a $6 million (£4.7m) deal to sign Cerro Porteno left-back Diego Leon. The 17-year-old made his first-team breakthrough with the Paraguayan side in August and has quickly established himself as the team’s first-choice left-back having made 19 league appearances so far. United have been in the market for a new left-sided defender following long-term injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia and have held talks for RB Leipzig’s David Raum ahead of the January transfer window. However, United have now secured the first signing of Ruben Amorim’s era by agreeing a $6m (£4.7m) fee with Cerro Porteno for Leon. According to ESPN’s Roberto Rojas and Tigo Sports’ Pedro Torres, Leon will remain with Cerro Porteno for the rest of the season and join United in the summer of 2025 after he turns 18. Leon, who scored on his debut in August, has said that he wants to play for Cerro Porteno in the Copa Libertadores, which starts next February. Speaking to Deportes Uno this week, Leon said: ‘I have huge expectations about playing in the 2025 Libertadores. ‘I’ve read about Manchester United’s link with me, I don’t know anything. Everything is handled by my agent. ‘I spent four years preparing for this opportunity, you have to take advantage of it when it comes. Now I’m thinking about everything that happened this season. The night before the debut I couldn’t sleep because of the excitement.’ Juan Carlos Pettengill, the vice-president of Cerro Porteno, said: ‘Diego Leon will play this season at Cerro, he can’t leave before he turns 18 years old,’ Pettengill said.
