Ex-PL CEO can't believe Man City could win legal challenge after 'very sad' development

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he is expecting Man City to fail in their legal challenge against the Premier League – with the case set to be “squashed”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed City may claim a “short-term” win by attacking and distracting from their 115 outstanding financial charges, which are due to be heard in November.

Man City and the Premier League are locked in a two-week arbitration process surrounding Associated Party Transaction (ATP) rules, with the case set to run until the end of next week.

The champions are suing for damages as they accuse top-flight rules of being anti-competitive and discriminatory towards the Gulf states.

APT rules prevent clubs from inflating commercial deals with owner-linked companies and effectively bypassing spending controls in the Premier League.

Man City to fail in Premier League legal battle, says Wyness

City already face 115 alleged financial charges – which are due to be heard in November across six weeks.

Wyness claimed it is “very sad” to see Man City take an “aggressive” position.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Long-term I think the claim will be squashed. I don’t think they’ll win it.

“But short-term, they’ll have achieved their goal of attacking and distracting the Premier League from the bigger 115 charges case.

“I think that’s the whole game.

“It’s very sad that they’ve taken such an aggressive position in the football discussion. It’s wrong.”
