Ex-PL CEO: Leicester must snub Potter and appoint 44-yr-old instead

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Leicester City should not appoint ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Foxes will need a “scrapper and a fighter”, with ex-Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper better suited to the role.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (10 June) that Leicester have made Potter and Cooper the top choices for their managerial vacancy.

It is believed the Foxes were upset by the departure of Enzo Maresca, who left the club for Chelsea earlier this month.

Sources say Potter, who was last in work at Chelsea in the 2022-23 campaign, is the preferred candidate to succeed Maresca.

Leicester are set to be hit with a points deduction and will be limited in the transfer market this summer after breaching financial rules last season.

Leicester told to appoint ‘scrapper’ Cooper to replace Maresca

Wyness claimed Cooper would be the right appointment as he is “familiar with hand-to-hand combat”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I see Graham Potter linked heavily, but I don’t know if that would be the right appointment.

“Nothing to do with his skills, but he’ll be facing some real issues with points deductions and noise around the club – I don’t think that fits his style of management.

“I see Steve Cooper as more of a scrapper and a fighter, he had more similar issues during his time at Nottingham Forest.

“That’s an understatement.

“He’s more suited to the type of environment Leicester are facing next season.

“If things can get resolved, then good luck to them – Potter would be a fantastic manager for the future.

“But as things stand, there are going to be a lot of distractions off the pitch – it’s going to be hard for Potter to try and work.

“They need a manager familiar with hand-to-hand combat. In reality, I’m expecting a very tough season – so they need someone who can get them through it.

“That’s just my opinion.”

In other news, Leicester points deduction may increase with “foolish” error.
