Ex-PL CEO: Man United doomed to fail in transfer fight after new twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Man United are doomed to fail in their legal battle against Uefa for blocking a move for Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Sir Jim Ratcliffe won’t have success with this challenge unless there are “extenuating circumstances”.

Man United have been blocked by Uefa from buying centre-back Todibo from French club Nice as INEOS owns both clubs.

And in a new twist, L’Equipe has reported (2 July) that West Ham have seen a bid of almost £30million rejected for the France international.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has reported that United hired Swiss lawyer Gianpaolo Monteneri to appeal Uefa’s decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Ratcliffe has hit out at the rules in recent media, claiming they are “not fair on the player and I don’t see what [they] achieve”.

Man United ‘in a losing position’ after ‘picking Uefa fight’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s strange to see them go legal against Uefa so quickly on this.

“I don’t think they’re going to see much success.

“It’s obvious that Ratcliffe is upset with the dual ownership issue.

“He seems to be fighting a lot of different issues on a lot of different fronts, and I’m surprised he’s added to that by picking a fight with Uefa.

“I’d have thought there would be bigger things to fight Uefa on, but he’s not likely to have much success here – unless there is some extenuating circumstance that goes beyond the rules.

“But I don’t see it – they’re in a losing position here.”
