Exclusive: Ruben Amorim already taking steps behind the scenes to keep £80m player at Man United

Manchester United are certainly on a high after Ruben Amorim secured his first derby win over Manchester City at his first time of asking.

Amorim’s 3-4-3 sufficiently stifled Man City at the Etihad and Man United were able to win thanks to the brilliance of Amad Diallo.

Of course, there were also a few understated performances for the visitors, including that of Harry Maguire.

Maguire played alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez at centre-back, thriving in a back three as he often has for England.

And to that end, TBR Football understands that Amorim has now given Maguire hope that he still has a future at the club.

Ruben Amorim wants Harry Maguire to stay at Man United beyond the season

Maguire doesn’t want to leave United, something he made clear to the club and any potential suitors in recent months.

The defender’s current deal expires at the end of the season and there is an option to extend, and Maguire’s focus has always been to continue his time at Old Trafford.

Maguire is not thinking at all about leaving the club, even if he could, in theory, sign a pre-contract with another club in just a couple of weeks time.

There is interest from a number of clubs about landing the defender on a free transfer, someone who cost United £80m back in 2019.

But TBR can confirm that Amorim has now spoken to technical director Jason Wilcox about Maguire and the prospect of United at least taking up the option on his deal.

Harry Maguire thinks he could still have long-term future at Old Trafford

On his part, Maguire still believes that he could yet have a longer-term future at the club even beyond the option being discussed which would extend his stay until 2026.

Maguire is seen as someone who is well-suited to a three centre-back system, explaining why he could be seen as a bigger asset to Amorim in comparison to Erik ten Hag.

The defender has already enjoyed a more prominent role since the former Sporting CP boss took charge, as was seen in the Manchester derby.

Sam Allardyce thought Maguire would thrive under Amorim, and it’s already beginning to look like a much better fit for all parties involved.
