Exclusive: What Liverpool are now thinking internally after PSG hold Mohamed Salah talks

Liverpool fans are enjoying life under Arne Slot – although supporters are not entirely bereft of worry as the future of Mohamed Salah remains uncertain.

Despite turning 32 back in June, the Egypt international is arguably in the form of his life right now.

The Liverpool No.11’s goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City was his 13th in 20 appearances across all competitions this season, while his assist for Cody Gakpo was the 11th goal set up by the Egyptian in what has been a remarkable campaign so far.

However, the man from Nagrig will leave Anfield for free in July when his contract expires – as things stand – despite a revealing interview in which he expressed a strong desire to stay on Merseyside.

The hesitance from Liverpool has now encouraged PSG to approach Mohamed Salah – with sources informing TBR Football how those inside Anfield have taken that news.

Liverpool unsurprised by PSG interest

Sources now inform TBR Football that PSG have held talks with intermediaries about bringing Salah to the Parc des Princes – but no discussions have taken place with the forward himself or his representatives.

The French giants hold an interest in offering the Liverpool No.11 a long-term contract, with the Reds unsurprised by PSG’s admiration and by no means taken aback by this development.

Interestingly, the length of contract is actually believed to be the issue at Anfield. TBR Football understand Salah wants a three-year deal, although Fenway Sports Group (FSG) hold concerns over whether the attacker can maintain his electric form across that duration of time.

Sources have also told TBR Football that the Liverpool talisman himself believes he can continue to compete at the highest level for another four to six years.

Money is not the main motivator for Salah, with those close to the situation claiming that the offer of a long-term contract from PSG could prove pivotal if Liverpool do not match the length.

TBR Football also understand clubs in the Saudi Pro League remain keen on signing Salah, who Peter Crouch puts below Kylian Mbappe, after Al-Ittihad saw a £150m bid rejected in September 2023.

What Mohamed Salah has said

As aforesaid, Salah himself recently spoke quite openly about his contract situation.

The man with 101 caps for Egypt told NBC Sports Soccer: “Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay at the club. I’m probably more out than in.

“I’m not going to retire soon so I’m just playing, focusing on the season and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I’m disappointed but we will see.

“You know I have been in the club for many years, there is no club like this, but in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.

“I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see.”

Clearly, Salah wants to stay at Liverpool – so it is now over to FSG to make a proposal.
