Exclusive: Wrexham open talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday forward

Wrexham are in talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, sources have told Football Insider.

The West Yorkshire giants are open to offers for Smith following the recent signing of Ike Ugbo, which has pushed him down the pecking order.

Smith had helped Wednesday win promotion back from League One but his game time fell away last season, especially under Danny Rohl.

The 32-year-old made 31 appearances in the Championship, but was only in the starting lineup for 11 of those games.

Smith was primarily used as an impact substitute later in the game last season, as he scored four goals throughout the campaign.

Smith is out of contract at Hillsborough next summer, making this window the club’s final chance to cash in on him.

Wrexham will look to add League One experience in Michael Smith

Wrexham are well stocked in attacking options with the likes of Steven Fletcher, Ollie Palmer, and Paul Mullin all being proven goalscorers.

However, signing Smith would guarantee some experience in League One for the newly promoted side.

The striker has made 257 appearances in the English third tier throughout his career, scoring 75 goals and providing 29 assists.

Smith isn’t the only Sheffield Wednesday attacker who a League One club is monitoring.

Football Insider reported that Rotherham United are currently in talks to sign Mallik Wilks before the window closes.
