Steven Thompson believes Cyriel Dessers was let off once again after Vaclav Cerny managed to scoop up his missed strike within the first minute of the Malmo versus Rangers tie.

The Gers managed to take the lead against the Swedish side within the first 56 seconds thanks to a rebounded strike from Cerny during Thursday’s (26 September) clash.

Dessers should have put the shot away, but instead his shot hit the post and deflected towards the Czech Republic international who was fortunately there waiting.

Speaking live on BBC Sportsound (26 September, 17:50), Thompson shared his thoughts on the Nigerian’s miss.

“It’s unbelievable. The Swedish team were caught napping,” he said.

“Dessers should have really scored himself but, thankfully for Rangers, Bajrami is there to knock it in.”

Cyriel Dessers has been lucky for Rangers this season

Dessers has found himself as the Gers’ top scorer and, while many would say his season has been a success due to the seven goals he’s managed to bag, he could’ve had at least double with the amount of chances he’s missed.

The Gers were supposedly looking to offload the striker in the summer in order to fund more arrivals to bolster their ranks; However, a move never came to fruition and the Nigeria international has led the line for the Gers ever since.

Granted, this is likely because Danilo has been out injured for the vast majority of the season, but even upon his return, Dessers is still likely to be Clement’s go-to number nine.

The former Cremonese man has even welcomed competition from Hamza Igamane this term, talking him up after what he saw in training [PLZ Soccer, 23 September].

But, if he isn’t careful and doesn’t improve his final third play, he could find himself replaced as the season goes on.

In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson has laughed at the possibility of Derek McInnes becoming the Gers’ manager.
