Rangers started their Europa League campaign with a 2-0 win over Malmo which left the Swedish media in meltdown.
Philippe Clement’s side secured three points in Europe on opening night thanks to an early Nedim Bajrami strike and a top strike Ross McCausland.
Despite having the larger share of possession, the home side failed to make that count with the Gers having more chances throughout.
Swedish outlet Expressen (26 September), was left fuming by the result and overall performance from the Sky Blue’s.
They said: “Malmö FF could not be recognized. The players looked lost, dejected. Busanello was far from alone in being careless. 0–2 could just as well have been 0–5 if Cyriel Dessers and Neraysho Kasanwirjo had better order in their finishes.
“It was written and talked about the dream draw for Malmö FF, but when you have now entered the tournament as crookedly as you did in the individual meeting against Rangers, the chances of advancement have deteriorated drastically. This was one of the matches that would bring points to the account.”
Rangers secure Europa League win against Malmo
It has not been a good start to the season for the Light Blue’s with bad feeling surrounding the club in the opening stages.
This was only made worse with a defeat in the Old Firm which saw supporters greet their players to share their views.
Things are now starting to look up for Clement and Co. after the latest news that Ibrox is back to full capacity and this excellent result on the road in the Europa League.
It wasn’t a perfect night in Sweden with Cyriel Dessers coming under fire once again for a string of missed opportunities.
With that being said, the supporters won’t care necessarily and are just generally pleased with a positive result in European competition.
It is frustrating that it isn’t in the Champions League but being in this competition could provide an opportunity to get through the opening phase.
Considering how rattled the Swedish media is, the Gers must have done something right.
