Rangers may have come away from their trip to Malmo with an excellent victory but Vaclav Cerny’s first-half miss was branded “horrific” by Michael Lahoud.
The CBS Sports pundit reacted live on the network’s half-time coverage of the Europa League game on 26 September, after the Wolfsburg loanee had been played clean through by Nedim Bajrami shortly before the break following nice link-up with Cyriel Dessers.
But the Czech failed to double the 1-0 lead by curling wide of the far post with only the keeper to beat, and Lahoud claimed he’d lost sight of where the goal was.
He said (6.38pm): “They’ll be kicking themselves because they deserve to be two, maybe three, goals up.
“You just saw the miss, a horrific miss, from Vaclav Cerny, a player who should put that away. If you’re Clement you preach patience but also being more clinical and decisive in the final third.
“They’re so good in counter-attack situations, and even though you change the DNA of the team from last season you still have enough quality in the final third…
“He actually had a bit more time to maybe pick his head up and go for the lob, look at the goalkeeper, way off the line. I was taught from a coach who said, ‘Always know where the goal is and where the goalkeeper is’, and I just think he lost sight of both and that’s why you saw the bad angle on the miss.”
Vaclav Cerny has bad night in top Rangers win
Cerny’s miss was dreadful but it would have been so much worse if it had allowed Malmo back into the match.
As it was a very impressive all-round performance meant Jack Butland was largely untested throughout the night.
And Cerny wasn’t even the only man to waste a guilt-edged chance set up by the impressive Bajrami, as Dessers and Neraysho Kasanwirjo contrived to do so in the second half.
Working in their favour was the fact that they both had good games otherwise, with Dessers needing to since Hamza Igamane had passport issues and couldn’t travel [4 Lads Had A Dream, 26 September] and Kasanwirjo needing to at left-back with Jefte suspended and Ridvan Yilmaz still injured.
Not everyone was on top form but there were enough who were for Clement to be very satisfied with what he saw from his players, and the Belgian will hope a 2-0 victory away at a side who have inflicted some damaging defeats on Rangers before can be a turning point after a rough start.
The result could genuinely have been 5-0 or better, but it is a measure of how well the Light Blues nullified their opponents that it didn’t feel especially edgy despite going ahead in the first minute and then repeatedly missing golden opportunities to find the second.
Ross McCausland eventually came off the bench and sorted the matter himself on great night in Europe for Rangers, if not for Cerny individually.
