Connor Barron has been “magnificent” for Rangers as an immediate starter under Philippe Clement, to the surprise of Neil McCann.
The BBC Sport pundit explained live on Sportsound on 26 September ahead of kick off against Malmo how he has heard that the former Aberdeen midfielder is the sort of character who would back himself to play anywhere, which was not what he had expected from the youngster.
The 22-year-old arrived on a free transfer from Pittodrie in the summer and was the only day one starter of the new signings at Hearts, but has been a fixture throughout the season so far.
McCann said, via the BBC Sport liveblog (7.37pm): “Connor Barron has been magnificent for me, I have to compliment the kid.
“I did not imagine him coming in and being the first midfielder on the team sheet every time.
“I’ve spoken to people who have said, he can go into any dressing room and fancy himself to play. He does not come across like that. He gives [his teammates] that security to go and support Dessers.”
Philippe Clement signs Rangers ace from Aberdeen
Most people would have expected Barron to be a useful bargain signing after his contract ran out at Aberdeen but he looks like turning out to be more important and more expensive.
He has featured in every game since he arrived and started all except the League Cup victory over St Johnstone, while the Dons are set to take the Light Blues to a tribunal over compensation after rejecting an offer for £525,000 [Scottish Sun, 25 June].
Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson has suggested the reason his former side are refusing to co-operate over the money is because his performances with the Gers have caused them to be all the more upset at losing him.
Clement was shocked by the “crazy” discovery that Rangers could end up paying more for the central midfielder than if he had signed for a foreign club, having shunned offers from England and Europe to head to Ibrox [Scottish Sun, 12 June].
But at the current rate he will be worth the investment as he gains more and more experience at the current rate.
Both he and regular midfield partner Mohamed Diomande still have further developing to do, and at times could benefit from a third man in the middle with them, but both put in solid performances in the 2-0 win at Malmo, and so far Barron has been a bargain.
In other Rangers news, a full Ibrox takeover has been called for amid whisperings of interest from abroad.
