Man Utd secure transfer for Paraguayan star to mark Ruben Amorim’s first signing
The first signing of the Amorim era!
Ruben Amorim’s first signing as Manchester United head coach is done after the club reportedly secured a deal for Paraguayan star Diego Leon.
Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November and is hoping to turn things around at United by reshaping the squad in the January transfer window.
The Red Devils are keen to recruit a new striker next month and had been linked to a number of left-backs, including Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.
United can now tick off a left-back, though, after 17-year-old Cerro Porteno wonderkid Leon signed all documents to join United in July 2025.
That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who reports highly-rated teenager Leon is set to join United for an initial $4 million (£3m), plus another possible $4m (£3m) in add-ons.
Similar to the deal Chelsea secured for Estevao Willian, United cannot officially bring Leon to Old Trafford until his 18th birthday has passed.
Leon turns 18 in April and United’s deal for the young South American was sealed by technical director Jason Wilcox.
Leon made his first-team breakthrough at Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno in August and scored the winning goal on his debut.
The youngster has quickly established established himself as the team’s first-choice option on the left side of defence and has made 19 league appearances so far this season.
Speaking to Deportes Uno this month, Leon made it clear that he is keen to play for Cerro Porteno in the Copa Libertadores, which begins in February.
‘I have huge expectations about playing in the 2025 Libertadores,’ Leon said.
‘I’ve read about Manchester United’s link with me, I don’t know anything. Everything is handled by my agent.
‘‘I spent four years preparing for this opportunity, you have to take advantage of it when it comes.’
