Mohammed Kudus could be hit with an extended ban after being sent off for violent conduct against Tottenham.
Football Insider understands that the Football Association will assess in the next 48 hours whether to punish him further for the incident in which he saw red in the 86th minute of his team’s 4-1 defeat on Saturday after lashing out at Micky van de Ven and Pape Matar Sarr.
The West Ham winger, who had scored the opening goal, left three Tottenham players on the floor after losing his head in Saturday’s defeat.
He first kicked Micky van de Ven in the back before shoving the defender in the face. Kudus followed that up by pushing Pape Matar Sarr in the head, while Richarlison was knocked over after running into the Ghana international during a subsequent melee.
Kudus was originally shown a yellow card by referee Andrew Madley, but this was upgraded to a straight red on VAR review.
Violent conduct offences are a minimum three-game ban, but Kudus could now receive a stricter punishment when the FA assess the match officials’ reports of the match.
Should the governing body decide to take retrospective action, there is the strong possibility of the suspension being extended to up to six matches.
Joey Barton was given a nine-game ban for three separate violent clashes when he was sent off for Queens Park Rangers against Manchester City in 2012.
Losing Kudus for longer than three games would be a devastating blow for West Ham given his significance to their attacking play.
He has started all eight of their Premier League matches this season, scoring two goals, after his 18-goal debut campaign in 2023-24.
West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui said he will speak to Kudus about the incident but claimed that he did not see the altercations.
“It’s not good for him, it’s not good for the club, for the team,” Lopetegui said. “But I can’t say anything more because I don’t see the action.”
West Ham, already trapped in a lower mid-table morass, host Manchester United next Sunday.
Erik ten Hag’s team have a mid-week European fixture before then, travelling to Fenerbahce for Thursday’s Europa League group stage clash.
