Pep Guardiola to sign new Man City contract in 'massive news'

Pep Guardiola is set to sign a contract extension at Man City in what has been described as a “very clever” move by the manager.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, explained that the “massive” news will distract from the background noise at the Etihad.

With the heating over City’s 115 charges for financial breaches having begun at the start of the month, and they are no longer the favourites to win the Premier League.

Questions have also emerged over the futures of key players including Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, while Rodri’s injury has come as a huge blow.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the club as things stand, having Guardiola commit to a new contract will settle plenty of nerves.

The manager’s current deal was set to expire at the end of the season, raising concerns about his long-term future, but those will now be put to bed.

Since taking over at the Etihad in 2016, Guardiola has created one of the most dominant sides in Premier League history, winning six league titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

Robinson has insisted the timing of the new contract will have been a calculated move by Guardiola and the top brass at City to pull the attention away from the club’s issues.

“It’s massive news for Manchester City,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s just typical Pep, it’s a very, very clever move.

“I think it shows his loyalty to the club and it shows he’s still got the hunger.

“His time at Manchester City will come to an end when he wants it to.

“They’ve got the charges looming over them, and for the first time in a number of years, they’re not the favourites to win the Premier League.

“So there are a lot of questions being asked of Man City. Something just doesn’t feel right.

“I just think with all that noise going on, this is perfect timing from Pep and the club.

“It’s a very clever move and I’m sure that’s what he wants – to take the noise and all of the distractions away. A new contract nips all the questions in the bud.”
