Tottenham did something no other Premier League side has ever done in 3-2 defeat against Brighton

Tottenham looked to be heading for a sixth consecutive win against Brighton on Sunday.

Early goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison put Spurs 2-0 up at the Amex Stadium, before the Seagulls fought back to secure a shock 3-2 victory thanks to strikes from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck.

The result leaves Tottenham ninth heading into the international break.

In throwing away a 2-0 lead to Brighton, Spurs actually made Premier League history…

Tottenham become first Premier League side ever to lose ten games having led by two goals

There are some records in sport which firmly slot into the category of being unwanted – and this is absolutely one of them.

As Opta relayed after the 3-2 defeat on Sunday, Tottenham have just become the first team in Premier League history to lose ten matches in which they were two goals ahead.

Opta did not mention the second worst side in these standings, but it is said that Spurs are three defeats ahead, so no other club has even come close to matching this woeful record.

Ange Postecoglou will be truly puzzled by his Spurs side

Tottenham looked to have turned a corner after starting the 2024/25 campaign with two defeats and a draw from the opening four games, having won two Premier League games in a row before Sunday’s clash against Brighton, and five in a row across all competitions.

All suddenly seemed very optimistic in N17, but Sunday’s 3-2 defeat represents a major setback for the north Londoners, leaving Ange Postecoglou with a mammoth task over the international break to lift his players once again.

Tottenham even could have been 3-0 up before the interval against Brighton, so the collapse will surely baffle the Australian, who looked completely despondent after defeat inside the Amex Stadium.

Dominic Solanke could only manage nine passes in the second half, four of which came from kick-off, despite enjoying a tremendous opening 45 minutes, which pretty much sums it up.

Hopefully, Spurs figure out how to become a grittier side who can kill off games, as there are a lot of top talents at Tottenham who really could achieve something special under Postecoglou, such as Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Pape Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.
