Expert: Tottenham to demand £100m+ for big-name star as Real Madrid & Man United approach

John Wenham claims Tottenham defender Cristian Romero would cost any interested clubs more than £100million.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose doesn’t want the 26-year-old to be sold.

It comes after TyC Sports reported (9 September) that Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Real Madrid all approached Tottenham about signing Romero in the summer.

However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks it is important that the North London side keep hold of the centre-back.

“We bought Romero for quite a big sum of money,” Wenham said.

“As a starting point, I think he would go for north of double what we paid for him. He has joined the club, won the World Cup and Copa America, and become an established name.

“Do we want to be selling our genuine world-class players? No, of course not, the big clubs don’t do that.

“However, if we did have to sell him, we’d be talking about a fee of £100million-plus.”

It seems as though Spurs want to keep hold of Romero, with fresh contract talks planned (via Fabrizio Romano, 19 September).

However, there is no guarantee that Romero will put pen to paper on a new deal in North London.

Next summer the defender will have just two years left on his contract. Therefore, Daniel Levy might have to start considering the possibility of moving him on if he won’t sign a new deal.

Romero is one of the club’s most valuable assets. As a result, the club can’t afford to let him run his contract down.

Therefore, it looks as though some tough decisions will need to be made within the next year.
