Tottenham have started the process of activating a clause to extend captain Son Heung-min’s contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The prominent Italian journalist posted on X [13 November] to report the skipper’s clause in his current deal is now closer to being activated, which would keep him at Spurs until June 2026.
The 32-year-old, who joined the club in 2015, sees his current deal expire next summer having last signed fresh terms in July 2021.
Romano wrote: “Tottenham have started the process to activate the clause to extend Heung-min Son’s contract until June 2026.
“At least one more season for Son at Spurs, this is the plan of the club.”
Tottenham Hotspur can secure boost with Son Heung-min clause
With turbulence currently affecting Tottenham in terms of results, the sooner the clause can be activated between the club and their talisman, the better.
Son has played under eight different managers in North London and the latest, Ange Postecoglou, has offered so far the most freedom in terms of fluid, attacking football to suit his game.
The issue for the Korean himself is that the bulk of his prime years have been spent at a club which has yielded him not a single domestic or European trophy, something he as a world-class footballer will have on his mind.
This will have intensified from a personal perspective since Son took the captain’s armband from Harry Kane, who left citing the same issue as he still looks for a first major title at Bayern Munich.
Son feels an immense loyalty to Spurs, which makes things interesting as to how post-2026 will develop for his veteran years.
But for now, Postecoglou and Tottenham look as though they will soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
