Daniel Levy has again prioritised income ahead of loyal Tottenham fans with recent European ticket decisions, Ian Darke says.
The TNT Sports commentator admits he sympathises with the Spurs fans who are being charged extortionate prices and having their season tickets charged early.
The club’s Europa League fixture with Roma [28 November] has offered the majority of tickets in a price bracket of £48-62, while the clash with IF Elfsborg – not until 30 January – has seen Premier League season ticket holders charged three months in advance of the game to secure a seat.
“I totally understand it and I’m in complete sympathy with the Tottenham fans,” Darke exclusively told Tottenham News.
“It’s hard really to even say too much more because it’s like financial gymnastics by the club, isn’t it? They’re maximising their income at every turn.
“It’s the way fans are generally manipulated. Alright, Roma is a pretty attractive opponent, but Elfsborg is one where they should be providing initiatives or giving away cheaper tickets, not charging season ticket holders months in advance.”
Tottenham Hotspur a microcosm of English football attitude
Tottenham have been far from the only club criticised by their own supporters for European ticket pricing, with Aston Villa making headlines for charging up to £85 for regular seats in the Champions League at Villa Park.
Levy has never been far from financial controversy involving the fans, and this latest turn has not gone down well with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust composing a furious statement online [X, 27 October].
The long-serving Spurs chairman has affirmed he ignores supporter criticism, though this has been debated [John Wenham, 23 September]; actions such as these, however, give ammunition to the business-minded argument against him.
In other Tottenham news, appeals arise for a new left-back to push Destiny Udogie in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
