Billy Dodds believes Rangers will pip Aberdeen to second place despite being nine points behind the Dons.
Rangers’ 1-0 win against Hearts at Ibrox on Sunday (10 November) prevented the gap from widening any further at the top of the table but Philippe Clement’s side still find themselves nine points behind the leading pack of Celtic and Aberdeen.
Dodds predicted how the remainder of the season could pan out for the Gers on Sportscene (10 November) and fans would not accept being so far off Celtic let alone the Dons.
He said: “It’ll be a close run thing, I still think they’ll get Aberdeen at some point just because of the budget and the numbers in the squad but they better get going and put a run together to close that gap.
“Rangers fans won’t accept them being nine points behind Celtic never mind Aberdeen. I think they’ll pip them eventually.”
Failure to finish above Aberdeen would be a significant failure for Rangers
In reality, ambitions at the start of each season are to win the title. Which this season, looks increasingly unlikely with performances far below the standard required to taste success.
It’s approaching four years since the Gers won the title, the last time being during Steven Gerrard’s reign back in 2021 and things don’t look like changing under Clement.
The next best-case scenario for Rangers is to finish second. With all things considered, if Rangers are beaten to that spot by Aberdeen it would represent a massive failure by the cub and everyone involved.
Finances, squad depth and transfer pull should all be major contributors to their ability to achieve that, although classing it as an achievement could seem far-fetched.
Ultimately, things need to improve at Ibrox. On and off the pitch. Gary Keown previously referred to the club as a “basketcase” and it is a huge indication as to how big the job is to turn things around for Rangers.
In other Rangers news, Steven Thompson felt John Souttar was extremely lucky not to have contributed to the Gers conceding in the first half in a “huge” moment against Hearts.
