Cyriel Dessers was singled out by Lee Miller and Billy Dodds after the striker scored yet another goal for Rangers against Hearts.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene (10 November), the duo had high praise for Dessers after his first Premiership strike since 24 August gave Philippe Clement’s side a narrow 1-0 victory at Ibrox.
Dessers turned in a goalbound effort from James Tavernier six minutes into the contest, scoring for the third game in a row after breaking an eight-game drought with goals against Motherwell and Olympiacos.
Miller said: “He gets a lot of stick as a striker, but he’s there to score the goals, always seems to find himself in good opportunities.
“Yes he maybe dilly-dallies sometimes in front of goal, but he pulls away and gets his goal today – all strikers are judged on their goals, and 10 in 20 is good.”
Dodds added: “He keeps going back for more, that’s the one thing you would say about him.
“Had a barren spell, then he’s got a few goals in the last few games – he keeps on going back in there, and getting his rewards.”
Cyriel Dessers finally breaks Premiership drought for Rangers
Scoring a first league goal in over two-and-a-half months will be a huge weight off Dessers’ shoulders as the leading number nine at Ibrox, having also made it 10 goals from 20 in all competitions.
Although he’s been reasonably prolific in the Scottish League Cup and continental competitions, the Premiership has been Gers’ key failing so far this season, resulting in plenty of pelters for Dessers.
The Nigerian international arguably hasn’t helped himself with comments about his rate of goals, but if he allows his football to do the talking – as he did on Sunday – fans will certainly warm to him more.
Proof, however, will be in the pudding, particularly when it comes to Clement’s side getting back on track in the title race, with Dessers’ goal bringing a 12-point gap at the top back to a still-sizeable nine.
Clement will need Dessers’ return to form to continue if the Gers are to hunt down Celtic and Aberdeen, and will be hoping that a first league goal since August sparks another lengthy spree for his number nine.
In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart was baffled at what referee Matthew MacDermid did before the full-time whistle at Ibrox.
