Barry Ferguson has revealed that “people inside” Ibrox have been blown away by Ianis Hagi’s “first class” attitude during his Rangers exile.
The Romanian international made his long-awaited first-team return against St Johnstone on Sunday (6 October) but his substitute appearance was cut short when he was sent off for a reckless tackle late on.
While Go Radio pundit Ferguson believed the attacking midfielder deserved to be given his marching orders, he admits he is delighted to see him back in the fold under Philippe Clement this season.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (7 October, 1:04:55) he said: “I’ve been really impressed by his attitude.
“He went and trained with the B Team, I spoke to a couple of people inside who said his attitude has been absolutely first class, and he’s made himself available to play games as well.
“It’s been a tough few months and I’m just glad now that it’s been sorted, they’ve sat down and now he’s clear to go and make an impact for Rangers.”
What happened to Ianis Hagi at Rangers amid Ibrox absence?
While Hagi was naive to go flying into a tackle in the manner that he did against St Johnstone, his desire to make an impact clearly got the better of him as he looked to grab his opportunity to impress with both hands.
It was a proper forward’s tackle. There was no real malice in the challenge, but it was terribly mistimed and unfortunately, the Romanian international ended up paying the price for his mistake.
Luckily, it didn’t cost Clement’s side on Sunday night as they still managed to pick up all three points thanks to Vaclav Cerny’s brace. Hopefully, Hagi will return from his suspension after the international break with the same desire to make his mark.
It would be a much bigger issue for the Gers if the attacking midfielder was moping about the pitch barely breaking into a sweat.
Clement will likely be happier to see him diving into tackles and throwing himself into training sessions than he would be if he downed tools in a similar manner to Todd Cantwell.
