Hugh Keevins: Rangers face 'accident waiting to happen' as squad deadline approaches

Rangers face an “accident waiting to happen” with a Champions League squad deadline approaching, according to Hugh Keevins.

Writing for the Daily Record on Sunday (July 28), the journalist reported that Philippe Clement must submit his squad for the qualifying rounds of the Champions League by Thursday.

He added that with so many experienced players having already departed Ibrox and with few arrivals, securing a spot in the group/league stage of the European competition might be extremely difficult.

Keevins wrote: “Dynamo Kyiv will surely not squander a 6-2 first-leg lead over Partizan Belgrade. They will be Rangers’ opponents in Poland a week later and resemble an accident waiting to happen.

“The list of experienced players who have gone, or are about to go, from Ibrox looks like an exercise in self-harm prior to taking on the Ukrainians. It’s all very well saying the ones who left, or are leaving, were part of a culture of failure at Ibrox.

“The questions are, who will replace them and how quickly can they get to Govan?”

Rangers must resolve their crisis quickly

Rangers are in deep trouble, and it’s time to face the facts. Philippe Clement’s optimism can’t mask the glaring issues at Ibrox.

The team is struggling, and the likely departure of players like Todd Cantwell [Kris Boyd, July 26], who opted for a transfer instead of stepping up, only exacerbates the situation.

New arrival Vaclav Cerny must be wondering what he’s walked into amidst this chaos. And, with the Champions League qualifiers around the corner, Clement’s task is daunting.

Losing experienced players just before crucial matches also feels like self-sabotage and the club’s recent performances in pre-season friendlies have done nothing to inspire confidence.

The upcoming match against Hearts adds even more pressure. Lawrence Shankland’s situation complicates things further; if he scores, Rangers will face backlash.

Clement has already admitted that his squad isn’t strong enough for the Champions League [The Sun, July 16], and recent losses only prove his point.

Rangers need quick, effective solutions. The fans deserve better, and the team must deliver before it’s too late.

In other Rangers news, six players have been named when it comes to who could be the next to leave Ibrox after Lammers.
