'What's changed?' - Pundit reacts as another Rangers ace dumped in reserves after going back on his word

Todd Cantwell leaving is a blow to Rangers but the quicker he leaves the club the better now that he has requested a transfer, says Derek Ferguson.

Philippe Clement revealed after the preseason loss at Birmingham that the attacking midfielder has twice asked to leave the club and has therefore been left in the B Team [Sky Sports, 25 July].

Ferguson is disappointed with the development as he feels Cantwell is a talented player when on form but wonders what has changed the situation so much since the 26-year-old was expressing his love for the club a matter of months ago [The Beautiful Game Podcast, 16 October].

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “The one thing I will say, if you even go back about six or seven months on social media, as we know Todd likes to go on, he comes on and says he loves this club and he’s going to be a Rangers support for life.

“You wonder what’s changed his mindset over the last six months. It’s maybe a role that he thinks he can’t fulfil under the current manager.

“It’s a shame because I think there is player in there with Todd Cantwell. Yes I wish he wouldnae go on the social media but that’s players in this day and age.

“It’s a shame because he’s one of our better players and that’s him not even training with us, he’s playing with the B Team.

“So the quicker he goes the better for all concerned. But for me personally, I’m disappointed, I think it’s a bit of a blow.”

Rangers changed after Philippe Clement replaced Michael Beale

Cantwell may have been speaking after the sacking of Michael Beale but the obvious factor that has changed between then and now is the presence of Clement as manager.

Beale’s time at Ibrox may not be remembered fondly by many but it sounds like he may have been the perfect manager for Cantwell in a way that the relationship has always seemed to be strained with his successor.

Clement’s arrival had a positive effect on the team at large but arguably sent the former Norwich player the other way, so Keith Jackson’s suggestion that one or the other would likely have to go [Daily Record, 22 July] was probably inevitable.

Since it appears to be the player who will be the manager has to be careful that he doesn’t end up following him out in similar style to Beale if he makes a bad start to the new season.
