Alan Stubbs believes the pressure will instantly increase on Sean Dyche at Everton now that The Friedkin Group has completed its takeover.
A new era is officially underway at Goodison Park – and at Bramley-Moore Dock beyond that – but doubts have immediately been raised over Dyche’s own future.
Dan Friedkin, who is unlikely to be in attendance this weekend against Chelsea, has shown at previous clubs he is not afraid to dispense with managers.
And in the view of former Toffees skipper Stubbs, Dyche will know improvements are needed on the field if he is to stay in a job.
“The big thing for the Friedkin Group is that they have stability off the pitch, and now they want it on it as well,” he told Sky Sports News [19 December, 1:08pm].
“If they are to get it, this is where the pressure is ramped up on Sean Dyche as a result. The Friedkin Group want stability, time to look around, make the right appointments and see the direction this club needs to go in. Even though we have financial stability, the biggest thing is the direction of this club.
“I think with the new owners coming in, the bar has been raised. Everyone in the football club now has accountability. Beforehand there was nobody to make decisions.
“It will perk everyone up and they’ve all got to raise the bar. The board will now oversee major areas of the football club that needs fixing. If ever there’s a time to step up to the plate, [Dyche] needs to step up now.”
Sean Dyche faces uncertain Everton future after Friedkins takeover
This takeover finally getting the green light is undoubtedly great news for everyone connected with Everton Football Club… except maybe Sean Dyche.
For all the talk of the experienced manager being under pressure at various points over the past 12 months or so, nobody was truly in a position to sack him.
Farhad Moshiri was just sitting by waiting for the day his tenure came to an end, while Kevin Thelwell does not have that sort of power.
Now, though, there are now hands-on owners in place and they will not mess about. This is a results business, and results have not been good enough for too long.
That may sound strange on the back of a 4-0 victory over Wolves and 0-0 draw with Arsenal, and those were rightly heralded as great results.
However, it has too often been a case of one step forward and two or three steps back. The bottom line is, Everton have been underperforming for too long now.
Some seem to think that this is the Toffees’ level, but that is not something supporters will accept. There is no reason why this squad cannot be comfortably in the upper bottom-half of the table.
As Stubbs says, the pressure is now on Dyche. Should one defeat be followed swiftly by another, there will undoubtedly be questions raised over the manager’s future.
Let’s hope that works as motivation to simply push on and use the past two results as a platform the build from.
