Barry Ferguson says he would like to see Hamza Igamane handed his first Rangers start against Dundee on Saturday.
In his column on page 47 of the Daily Record [19 September], the former Gers captain has backed an opportunity for the “explosive” Moroccan to take the place of Cyriel Dessers who can be rested.
After the victory at Dundee United last weekend for Philippe Clement’s side, the rival Dundonians will visit Glasgow for Saturday evening’s Scottish League Cup quarter-final tie.
Ferguson explained: “I’m also curious to see if there is a starting place for Hamza Igamane after an interesting couple of cameos from the Moroccan in two games against Celtic and [Dundee] United.
“I can see why fans are excited because he’s explosive…and looks like a talented boy with the ball at his feet. These are all the raw ingredients you’re looking for in a Rangers striker and this might be an ideal chance to give him a run-out and allow big Cyriel Dessers to rest his legs, after so long as the only fit and available No. 9.
“Dessers would say otherwise, I’m sure. As players you’re never happy to sit games out. But he deserves a break when he can get one and maybe the arrival of Igamane might also give him a new spark in terms of competition for a starting place.”
Rangers ready to unleash Hamza Igamane?
Rangers supporters are excited about Igamane for several reasons, some of which Ferguson has already touched on [Go Radio Show, 16 September].
The fact he is just 21, has come from a scarcely covered league in Morocco and arrives at a time when excitement has come at a premium for the Ibrox faithful means he is a welcome quantity.
Clement has yet to start the bustling forward, who as the ex-Gers skipper mentions can be the much-needed attacking alternative to the heavily relied-on Dessers.
A home crowd behind Igamane would be sure to add that edge and a goal would certainly make him feel far more of a Rangers player by the end of Saturday night.
A maiden start for the seven-figure signing would make sense – it could be time for Clement to unleash a few who have been waiting in the wings.
