Kieran Maguire has shared that The Friedkin Group will not be able to go “large” in the January transfer window at Everton.

The Friedkin Group completed the Toffees takeover on Thursday [19 December], and there were suggestions that the new owners were preparing for a major squad overhaul in their first transfer window [TEAMtalk].

However, football finance expert Maguire has poured cold water on the speculation when discussing the Blues’ finances on The Price is Football [24 December, 7:04] but admitted there could still be new additions at Goodison Park.

He said: “The big question that we’re being asked now is how does this leave the club in terms of the January transfer window. And the answer is, probably no better off than before [they] might be marginally better off if they can save some of the interest that would have been paid.

“So there’s not an opportunity to go large as far as January is concerned, there was some modest wiggle room already, as far as the finances at Everton were concerned. So they might be able to do deals, but there’s going to be nothing significant as far as this particular window is concerned.”

Sean Dyche can still strengthen his Everton squad in January

Although the news will come as a blow to Everton fans who had hoped for significant investment in January, not all hope is lost.

The main priority for TFG is to ensure the Blues are in a strong financial position for the foreseeable future, and as Maguire eludes to, there is still room in the transfer kitty to conduct some much-needed business.

Everton have only 12 players in the first team squad whose contract extends beyond the current season – a worrisome position to find themselves in but the perfect opportunity to rebuild under new ownership.

One of those is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and while his performances have left a lot to be desired this season, he is generating plenty of interest ahead of January with Serie A giants AC Milan preparing to make their move [TEAMtalk].

However, Sean Dyche has already identified the perfect replacement in Rangers forward Hamza Igamane [TBR Football] and could take advantage of the Gers’ perilous financial situation north of the border with an offer just over the £1.7 million they paid for his services.

After two 0-0 draws against Arsenal and Chelsea, Everton are now hitting their stride in the Premier League, and excessive midseason recruitment may no longer be necessary.

And if finances remain a cause for concern after the takeover, TFG would be best served keeping the wallet shut, waiting for the Blues’ top-flight status to be confirmed for next year before embarking on a huge rebuild in the summer.
