Dan Friedkin is much better placed than the “risky” John Textor to complete a takeover at Everton, according to Stefan Borson.
The football finance expert posted on X (23 September) to compare the two prospective buyers, after news emerged that Friedkin is closing in on a deal to complete a takeover ahead of Textor [Bloomberg, 23 September].
Friedkin previously had a share purchase agreement with Farhad Moshiri before pulling out in July, and during that time invested £200million in the club via working capital and a £158m loan repayment to MSP Sports Capital [The Independent, 22 June].
Borson wrote: “Friedkin’s best feature as a prospective owner of Everton is deliverability.
“It may even not be a long-term purchase – but he can complete, is miles ahead on due diligence, already has £200m in the club and can therefore do it all much quicker.
“Textor looks too risky.”
Everton look set to dodge a bullet with Dan Friedkin takeover
Friedkin re-entering the fray mere months after seemingly abandoning any prospect of taking over at Goodison Park is the latest twist in the increasingly long-winded ownership saga at Goodison Park.
In the wake of the Roma owner withdrawing from talks with Moshiri in July, Textor had emerged as the front-runner, but questions remained over his financial strength and ability to complete a buyout.
Textor is still in the process of selling his 45 per cent stake at Crystal Palace, with Premier League ownership rules meaning this would need to happen for a deal to be sanctioned.
Friedkin, meanwhile, has no such issue, and given he’s already put £200m into the club, there will be confidence from both ends regarding his ability to take charge.
The two American investors had looked set to battle it out for control of one of English football’s greatest institutions, but with Friedkin likely to win out, Toffees fans will be breathing a sigh of relief.
In other Everton news, Jason Cundy has shared the warning he gave the Toffees during their draw with Leicester on Saturday.
