Ticket price “concerns” have emerged at Tottenham after recent Europa League controversy in North London, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Reports suggest that Spurs were one of three clubs to informally oppose the reductions on the maximum ticket prices teams can charge travelling fans for European fixtures [The Telegraph, 3 September].
The Lilywhites have insisted that no formal vote ever took place on the matter, but Plumley isn’t convinced that Spurs need the added income they could receive from higher ticket prices.
“We have to balance that with the statement from the club,” Plumley exclusively told Tottenham News.
“The club have said there wasn’t a formal vote on this, so they didn’t vote against it but the term has been a kind of informal opposition to the price cap.
“It’s an interesting one in terms of the club’s stance on that. They’re saying it’s not a vote so they haven’t voted against it, but the news story doing the rounds is that there were three clubs informally against the proposal.
“You can see the business angle that you don’t want to stifle that little bit of income generation and potential boost you could get from away fans, especially if you’ve got some plumb fixtures in the draw.
“There’s that angle there from the financial side of things and we know that Daniel Levy is a very hard negotiator on all things business, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out in the grand scheme of things and what actually happens with that.
“You can question whether or not the club really needs that extra little squeeze from the income and I think there are rightly some concerns there about the ticket prices across the system.
“But the bottom line here is that clubs are seeing this purely through the business lens and that’s the reality of the situation across the European football industry.”
Did Tottenham oppose the European ticket cap?
As Plumley suggests, it is clear that Spurs and the other clubs that have opposed this informal ticket cap are viewing their supporters as consumers rather than football fans.
In the grand scheme of things, the added revenue generated by higher ticket prices for travelling supporters will be minimal for a club of Spurs’ size.
Tottenham’s decision to informally oppose such a proposal is unlikely to help them avoid a PSR breach or a potential point deduction.
In other Tottenham news, Levy has managed to secure a “win-win” deal in North London with a last-minute transfer agreement
