Tottenham are unlikely to benefit financially from Dominic Solanke’s inclusion in the England squad, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Lee Carsley has included the 27-year-old in his squad for October’s Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland, seven years after the striker was handed his first international cap against Brazil in 2017.
Although it isn’t yet clear whether or not the Spurs forward will feature in either game, Plumley admits that Ange Postecoglou’s side could receive a boost from the exposure of having a player back in the England side.
“It’s more the exposure piece than any direct financial gain,” Plumley exclusively told Tottenham News.
“You’d be looking at the leverage of the exposure piece and having international players all the way around the globe is important to clubs as well.
“But it will be more from the exposure side than the financial benefit because you have the other side of the coin there where managers will be worried sick about players picking up injuries on international duty.
“They want them to be ready and raring to go for club fixtures so while it has an impact for sure, it is much more about the exposure and how you can leverage that.
“The prestige factor as well, rather than a direct financial return.”
How much did Tottenham pay for Dominic Solanke transfer this summer?
Harry Kane’s exploits with England during his time at Spurs really helped draw eyes to Tottenham at the time and there is little to suggest that Solanke couldn’t do the same if he thrives with the Three Lions.
Daniel Levy is a shrewd operator and incredibly business savvy. While his main reason for signing the 27-year-old this summer would have been to improve Postecoglou’s striking options, his marketability would have also appealed.
However, the most important thing for Spurs will be that the former Bournemouth man returns from international duty without injury. It would be a major blow if Tottenham’s primary source of goals was ruled out for an extended period.
