Rangers are set to sign a “diamond in the rough” as they close in on completing a deal for Hamza Igamane, according to Dan Plumley.

The Ibrox club have agreed a deal worth between £1.5million [KoraMaroc, 16 June] and £2.5million for the 21-year-old Moroccan forward, with an announcement mooted for Monday (David Edgar, 24 June).

The club have targeted untapped markets and young players since the arrival of Philippe Clement with the likes of Mohammed Diomande and Jefte joining, but football finance expert Plumley admits that it’s a gamble they have to take as they can’t compete with the elite clubs in Europe for the top talent.

I think so. You’ve seen a lot of clubs, I would say, know that Europe is a saturated market and a lot of clubs have been looking at South America, but we know there’s potential all the way around the globe,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“If you look at at club like Rangers, you’ve got to try and engineer a way to make that work for you because with respect, it’s not just Rangers but this is a number of clubs, you can’t compete with that elite kind of talent ID level because every club has got scouts here, there and everywhere scattered around the globe.

“So if you can find a diamond in the rough in a new market where the potential there is untapped, and it’s a relatively cheap fee in this instance, and of course there is still risk attached to that, but it’s that speculate to accumulate, and if you’re buying players for £1.5million, it’s not a bad speculative investment.

“It could pay off, and then potentially as we’ve seen with Rangers in the past, you can develop that talent, give it a platform to succeed and then sell him for a profit further down the line.”

Rangers must gamble to secure top talent

There’s no doubting that the transfers Rangers have made this summer are gambles for the most part, but they are necessary gambles.

Connor Barron is a talented young Scottish player with great potential, Jefte is an attacking left-back that Philippe Clement likes, Clinton Nsiala came through at AC Milan so will have a great upbringing in the game (and was free) and Oscar Cortes is already familiar with the club and the way the manager works.

But Igamane is arguably the biggest gamble coming straight from Morocco, but if the scouts have identified him as someone who can do what they want then it could be shrewd business.

It’s the type of moves that the club must make to separate themselves, in the same way Celtic did with the Asian market in recent years, and find a way to close the gap on their domestic rivals.
