'For a while...' – Rangers hero makes Celtic jibe ahead of Champions League start

Rangers hero Kris Boyd has poked fun at Celtic ahead of their Champions League campaign kicking off on September 18.

In an interview on Sky Sports News (18 September), Boyd took a dig at their Old Firm rivals for their failure to advance beyond the group stages of European competitions in years.

While Rangers went all the way to the Europa League final in 2022, Celtic last played in the knockout stages of any continental competition in 2020, losing in the Europa League round of 32.

In quotes reported by the Daily Record (18 September), Boyd said: “With the home games, Celtic will fancy themselves to pick up some decent points.

“I think the draw has been kind to them – the format has definitely enhanced their chances of qualifying for that knockout stage, shall we say?

“Celtic fans might get to see their team play in Europe after Christmas, it’s not happened for a while.”

Rangers must close gap on Celtic

Talk of the sizeable gap between the two Old Firm rivals has gone into overdrive in recent weeks, following Celtic’s 3-0 triumph in the first derby of the season at Parkhead.

However, it’s easy for Hoops fans to forget that two years ago, their biggest rivals were just one missed penalty away from sealing Europa League glory against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

The best way for Rangers to bridge the gap on Celtic both on and off the field has been a much-discussed topic at Ibrox, with some believing it could take a full overhaul from top to bottom.

Philippe Clement’s side have a three-month wait until they face their bitter rivals again in the New Year, and must make significant strides in this period if they’re to show any sign of progress.

The Old Firm defines the fortunes of all those at Ibrox, and while the Gers have outmatched their rivals on the continent, their current focus must be to regain supremacy on the domestic front.

In other Rangers news, Boyd has told both Old Firm sides to be “worried” about new developments at one rival Premiership club.
