Four Lads predicts if Dujon Sterling will be made Rangers captain next season

Four Lads Had A Dream does not believe Philippe Clement will hand Dujon Sterling the Rangers captaincy ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 24-year-old has become a fan-favourite at Ibrox since arriving from Chelsea as a free transfer last summer, especially after how he spoke out during the team’s drop in form towards the end of the season.

Despite making only eight starts in the Scottish Premiership due to injury, he may be given more chances in his natural position next season if James Tavernier is to depart Ibrox this summer.

Stevie Clifford – speaking via The Rangers Review YouTube channel on Wednesday (19 June) – however, is concerned by the player’s recent injury history.

“Dujon Sterling was fantastic for Rangers last year but he had so many injuries. Availability-wise, your captain has to be durable, he’s got to play. Long-term captaincy? Dujon Sterling – absolutely,” he said.

“It’s not to downplay his ability, I just don’t think you’d hand captain to someone who hasn’t settled in yet. He’s going to kick on and do big things for Rangers, I’m sure of it. We may even see him being the first-choice right-back going forward, but I would be reluctant to name him as captain.”

Could Dujon Sterling be named Rangers captain next season?

Before Sterling is named the Rangers captain, he must cement himself in Clement’s starting lineup for at least one season, which he did not manage to do during his first year in Scotland.

The 24-year-old has the ability to be a leader. His comments during Rangers’ sticky patch as Celtic claimed the league title ahead of them, were refreshingly honest.

Players, sometimes, are far too media trained, which can often frustrate the fans if they feel they’re unable to speak out honestly about their feelings and thoughts on the situation.

Tavernier is a great example of a true leader, though his time at Ibrox could be coming to an end after registering 125 goals in 460 appearances from right-back.

Someone will need to take over next season, and the obvious selections would be one of the centre-backs or goalkeeper Jack Butland, though his future is also up in the air this summer.

Once Sterling proves that his injuries do not make him a liability, Clement will have no issue handing him the captain’s armband.
