Maurizio Sarri wants Dan Friedkin to sign midfielder Piotr Zielinksi if he is appointed to succeed Sean Dyche at Everton, according to Inter Live.
The Italian outlet reported on 1 October that with Dyche’s position looking “shaky” on Merseyside, Sarri is incoming owner Friedkin’s first choice to succeed the 53-year-old in the Goodison Park dugout.
Sarri has been out of work since leaving Lazio in March, and has reportedly identified Zielinski – who he brought to Napoli in 2016 – as the player at the top of a list of targets to turn the Blues’ fortunes around.
Friedkin is reportedly willing to satisfy Sarri’s transfer requirements if he does displace Dyche, and with Zielinski playing a bit-part role at Inter Milan since his switch to San Siro, the Toffees will reportedly not rule out pursuing a deal to sign him in January.
Piotr Zielinski could be perfect transfer to start Everton revolution
Friedkin’s takeover at Goodison Park is not ratified yet, but once the US billionaire is given the green light by the Premier League, he will have free reign to make sweeping changes on Merseyside.
Brand-new boardroom appointments have already been mooted, and although Dyche picked up his first league win of the season on 28 September, his job is still anything but safe at this early stage [HITC, 21 September].
With their new stadium close to completion and over £500million debt to make up sooner rather than later [Kieran Maguire, 24 September], the Toffees know the relegation would be a huge blip and Friedkin will want to do all he can to avoid that.
Appointing Sarri mid-season – and the complete style-of-play overhaul he would bring – would have plenty of pros and cons, but signing Zielinski of all players would certainly help to ease the transition.
Zielinski was a hub of Sarri’s transformative Napoli side between 2016 and 2018, and with the “dream” of a Premier League move preferable to Inter’s bench, he could be the player who represents a changing of the guard on Merseyside.
In other Everton news, one new Toffees signing’s return date from a long-term injury problem has been suggested.
