The Friedkin Group are unconvinced on whether to keep a number of the Everton players who have expiring deals, TEAMtalk reports.
According to the outlet’s website on 31 October the incoming new owners could oversee a major change to the squad next summer as they are yet to decide on whether to offer new deals to a host of players whose current contracts expire at the end of the season.
The Toffees are trying, and so far failing, to get Dominic Calvert-Lewin signed up, but with the likes of Michael Keane, Abdoulaye Doucouré, Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Young among those who are also in the final months of their deals despite being regulars the team could look very different next season.
Some of the exit-bound players are reportedly reluctant to commit themselves to the club until it is clear that Everton won’t get relegated.
Michael Keane, Abdoulaye Doucouré on expiring Everton deals
It would be something of a disappointment for many Toffees fans if the squad didn’t start to look very different from next season.
If all goes to plan the idea is surely for the new owners to use what PSR room they have to invest in a squad which has been fighting at the wrong end of the Premier League for consecutive seasons.
Players such as Doucouré have proven crucial in recent seasons, with his goals especially vital under Sean Dyche, but despite some improved form recently the likes of Young and Keane may have been moved on some time ago in easier circumstances.
However, it will take time for the Roma owners to increase the commercial performance at Everton, although there are big plans seemingly on the cards [The Athletic, 25 October], and the effect of moving into the new stadium will only be cumulative from that point.
It remains to be seen whether the Toffees managed to shoot themselves in the foot by backing Manchester City’s case against the Premier League, with the outcome on Associated Party Transactions yet to be decided.
Should measures be applied retroactively then it would make the club’s spending room all the tighter.
So The Friedkin Group’s ability to sign a huge number of players at once is likely to be restricted and some of the names they don’t see having major roles long into the future may be needed on a short-term basis.
In other Everton news, Dan and Ryan Friedkin are staying away from Goodison Park as Merseyside talks have emerged on site with the Americans’ group.
