Gary O’Neil is set to be given the upcoming Ipswich Town fixture to try and save his Wolves job, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the under-fire boss has been working “with his hands tied behind his back” this season.
Wolves lost some of their best players during the summer transfer window in Pedro Neto and Max Kilman but failed to replace them, which has made O’Neil’s job significantly hard.
The 41-year-old has been open about that challenge recently, and if he is sacked it could be seen as a cost-cutting measure by the club as O’Neil was making it clear he needs financial backing after the West Ham defeat.
The Midlands giants are currently 19th in the Premier League table after the first 15 games, having won just two fixtures this season.
Wolves are four points adrift of safety but would leapfrog Ipswich in the table if they were to secure a victory on Saturday (14 December).
Wolves could make a replacement decision
Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that if the club does look to replace him, then it will likely be someone who is already out of work and will be relatively cheap.
The Wolves managerial job is currently viewed as a tough sell within the industry because there is a shoestring budget available for whoever is in charge.
Any potential O’Neil replacement would be working with a small squad and a lack of funds to try and improve it.
