'Going to be important' - Dan Bardell identifies advantage for Tottenham 'Key Man' in NLD

Dan Bardell believes Declan Rice’s suspension can be an advantage for Tottenham “key man” James Maddison in the North London derby against Arsenal.

Rice was sent off in controversial circumstances as the Gunners drew with Brighton before the international window and will miss Sunday’s (15 September) clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell thinks Rice’s absence will afford Maddison more space to operate and the chance to affect the game.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “Obviously James Maddison is going to be important.

“Generally, if he’s played well Tottenham have played well and won games. With Declan Rice missing, that could give Maddison more space and extra time to get involved throughout the game.

“He would go down as the key man to me because if he creates the chances, there are players who can put them in the back of the net.“

It is certainly a boost to Ange Postecoglou’s side to see that the Gunners are without Rice for the blockbuster clash in North London.

The Englishman is a midfield general and his absence in Mikel Arteta’s side will certainly be felt given his importance since signing from West Ham.

Arsenal’s loss is Tottenham’s gain as this could allow Maddison to shine in the derby if more space is afforded to him.

The 27-year-old started last season on fire and is yet to truly rediscover that form but he could have that chance against Arsenal.

In other Tottenham news, a loan decision is set to be made ahead of the January transfer window as a new “problem” was mooted.
