Gordon Duncan has sarcastically called for the Scottish League Cup semi-final to be moved away from Hampden Park after a fan suggested Rangers would have an advantage over Motherwell.

Philippe Clement’s side are set to face Stuart Kettlewell’s side at the national stadium on Sunday 3 November having brushed past Dundee in the quarter-finals at Ibrox on Saturday (21 September).

The Light Blues have spent most of the season so far playing their home matches at Hampden and one Gers fan believes it could give Clement an advantage, much to the frustration of Clyde 1 presenter Duncan.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday (23 September) the fan said: “I’m just wondering about the semi-final being played at Hampden.

“I think it’s going to be a bit of an advantage for Rangers. All these new boys that have started have got a bit of a taste for Hampden having played at home as such.”

Duncan quickly replied: “Good point, I agree. Let’s get that moved. Vaclav Cerny is used to it but Apostolos Stamatelopoulos went off injured when he played there that one time.

“I like it, do you think that’s an advantage to Rangers?”

When is Rangers Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park?

It was clear from the tone of Motherwell fan Duncan’s response that his tongue was firmly in his cheek, but the caller may well be right that the Gers’ new signings will be boosted having previously played at the national stadium.

The likes of Cerny and Connor Barron all have experience of playing inside Hampden and while a couple of the Motherwell squad, like Andy Halliday, have also played there, it is more of an unknown quality for them.

Ultimately, there is no chance that game will be moved away from the national stadium and it is unlikely that any Motherwell supporters would have expected the SFA to make that sort of decision anyway.

For Clement and his side, that game is still a long way away. The Gers’ focus simply has to be on starting well in the Europa League and dragging themselves back into the title race.

Hopefully, the Gers will put a winning run together before the semi-final with Motherwell rolls around.
