Terry Phelan reveals that Rangers, Celtic, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City approached him as a youngster.
The former Premier League left-back, who played over 40 games for the Republic of Ireland national team, admits that he does not regret saying no to either of the Glasgow clubs and missing out on the chance of playing in the Old Firm.
During his career, Phelan played for a number of historic clubs including Leeds United, Everton, Wimbledon and even Chelsea.
Speaking on the Oddballs and Outcasts Podcast, Phelan said on 29 July at 1:02:33: “I could have probably signed for anybody at 12 years of age. I think my mother got fed up of all the chocolates and the flowers she could have opened a chocolate shop. Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, there was Leeds United, Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic over there in Scotland [approached him].
When asked if he regretted not playing in the Old Firm, he responded “No, because I went to Manchester City instead and you know, we were building something at Manchester City under Peter Reid and obviously, it didn’t happen out that way.”
Rangers would undoubtedly have benefited signing someone like Terry Phelan
Gers would have undoubtedly benefited from signing Phelan due to his exceptional defensive skills and versatility on the pitch.
The Irishman’s ability to play as a left-back and wing-back would have provided the club with tactical flexibility, allowing them to adapt to different game situations.
Furthermore, Phelan’s experience playing for top clubs in England, such as Manchester City, Chelsea, and Everton, would have brought a wealth of knowledge and professionalism to the Rangers squad and he could’ve become a regular, playing week in and week out at Ibrox.
His familiarity with high-pressure situations and big games would have been invaluable in the intense Old Firm derby matches against Celtic.
Moreover, Phelan’s international experience with the Republic of Ireland, including appearances in the 1994 World Cup, would have added a layer of leadership and composure to the Scottish side.
His presence in the dressing room and on the pitch could have positively influenced younger players and contributed to a winning mentality.
In other Rangers news, a £3million development has emerged as Gers want to secure the services of Lawrence Shankland.
