Clement admits Ibrox door is 'Always Open' for exit-linked Rangers star

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has admitted that the “door is always open” for Todd Cantwell to rescind his transfer request.

Clement confirmed following the Gers’ pre-season clash with Birmingham City that the midfielder had asked to leave Ibrox this summer having been surrounded by transfer speculation [Heart and Hand, 24 July].

Although there has been little suggestion the 26-year-old would be open to remaining a Light Blues player, Clement has insisted that he won’t deny Cantwell the opportunity to return to the fold in Glasgow.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday (29 July) he said: “I kept the door all the time open all these weeks.

“It is already a while ago that he came the first time with that. As long as a player is here and we believe in his qualities the door is always open.

“But, of course, we need to focus now on the guys who are totally with their minds in the club to get results in the next couple of weeks. We will see what happens.”

It is never easy for a player to come back into the fold after so openly making the request to depart a club, but Clement appears to be ready to do that if Cantwell decides to take back his transfer request.

Whether or not the Rangers supporters would be quite as willing to accept the 26-year-old’s decision remains to be seen as many supporters have long since grown tired of his antics off and on the pitch over the last few seasons.

Ultimately, it would probably be best for all parties involved if the Englishman was sold this summer given the public nature of his transfer request, but nothin appears to be imminent and clubs don’t seem to queuing for his signature.

Hopefully, this situation is solved sooner rather than later as it won’t help Cantwell or the Gers if this situation drags on until the transfer deadline.
