Chances Rangers could resurrect talks for ace Clement has pinpointed emerge - report

Rangers are not likely to resurrect discussions over a deal for Joan Jordan again during the transfer window after pulling out of talks, the Scottish Sun reports.

According to the paper’s website on 28 July the Light Blues are now looking at alternative targets after the pursuit “hit a wall” and with talks over they are “unlikely” to be reopened before the deadline.

Philippe Clement had reportedly pin-pointed the Spanish midfielder for his rebuild and multiple offers were made to Sevilla for a loan move, but the 30-year-old was seemingly unconvinced.

The Belgian has been after a senior central midfielder after losing John Lundstram and Ryan Jack to free transfer exits and has also seen a surprise move for Norwich captain Kenny McLean fall through [Norwich Evening News, 20 July].

Rangers also missed out on Kenny McLean from Norwich

The importance of a commanding, experienced presence in the centre of the park has been highlighted as a “massive” requirement by ex-Gers midfielder Derek Ferguson, speaking to Ibrox News.

Connor Barron’s addition after leaving Aberdeen is one of the best moves the Light Blues have made this summer and Mohamed Diomande has already shown plenty of quality in his time with the club.

But both are so young – 21 and 20 respectively – that they are still developing and with Jack and Lundstram departing soon after Steven Davis retired there is a sudden gulf in experience at the position.

Even injured Nico Raskin is only 23 so it is no shock to see Clement is working to add a senior presence to the group.

Connor Goldson’s exit to Aris Limassol is expected to be completed any time and James Tavernier’s future remains up in the air so, as things stand, there is going to be massive pressure on the remaining older players.

Jack Butland will be expected to be a key leader and even exit-linked striker Cyriel Dessers might be thrust into such a role, but the manager will surely want to make a few more key signings before the window shuts to share that load.

In other Rangers news, an Ibrox favourite has been left disgusted by what he has seen Light Blues players do ahead of the new season.
