Rangers did not consider Sam Lammers playing as a number nine before he sealed a permanent move to FC Twente, according to Chris Jack.

Gers received £3million from the sale of the 27-year-old [David Edgar], which initially is a slight loss as they signed him for £3.5million last summer. [BBC]

Lammers spent the second of last season on loan at Utrecht where he enjoyed an impressive goal-scoring run.

Jack told Rangers Review’s YouTube channel on 29 July at 7:25: “I spoke to someone about that possibility, ‘Can Lammers play a different position where he can be more effective?’ It was a case of ‘No because playing number 9 for Rangers is very different than playing number 9 in Holland.

“He also had good success during his loan in the second half of the campaign. That has allowed Rangers to get some sort of a fee for him.

“Six to eight weeks into last season, we had all written him off. If Lammers can hit the various targets as part of this deal then Rangers can recoup that fee. Importantly, it’s a wage that’s off the wage bill as well.

“It’s a deal that makes sense for all parties. He was never going to operate as the Rangers number nine.”

Rangers took the right decision by selling Sam Lammers

Gers made the correct decision in selling Lammers as he struggled to adapt to the demands of playing as a number nine and even as a ten.

This was because he had a disappointing first half of the season at Ibrox, leading many to question his suitability for the team.

Although they incurred a slight initial loss, getting £3 million for a player who was not performing well is a reasonable outcome.

Offloading the Dutchman also frees up space on the wage bill, allowing the club to potentially invest in players who are better to their system and needs.

It’s a decision that benefited all parties and hopefully, they use this money well to strengthen the first team.

It remains to be seen whether or not a quality striker is signed as Lawrence Shankland would certainly tick a lot of boxes.

In other Rangers news, a £3million development has emerged as Gers want to secure the services of Lawrence Shankland.
