'Got it wrong there' - McCann baffled by what Clement did in Rangers v Dundeed Utd

Neil McCann was left baffled by Philippe Clement’s decision to use John Souttar as a makeshift striker late in Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Dundee United.

With the Gers desperate to find a winner at Ibrox on Saturday (23 November) the Scotland centre-back was shifted further forward to try and use his height as an advantage.

It was a decision that proved fruitless and one that McCann – speaking on BBC Sportscene (23 November, 30:00) just could not fathom in another disappointing result for Rangers.

“You’re looking at the subs, last eight or nine minutes, John Souttar’s playing as a secondary striker. Now if you’re making your last sub and you’re bringing Bajrami off, and you’re putting Igamane on to play left, why not put Igamane up top?” McCann said.

“Dundee United are sitting in, you’ve got one of the best crossers of the ball this country’s ever seen in James Tavernier sitting on the bench so replace Sterling with Tavernier because you’re going to dominate the ball, you get two strikers on and you go and get that winner.

“I think today he got it wrong there at the end absolutely, almost like he’s changing personnel but it needed a change of attack. I don’t know if he’s told by Philippe Clement and his coaching staff to go and stand up for the last eight minutes but I’d much rather have a striker in there, a secondary striker, and someone who can deliver balls.”

Philippe Clement desperate with John Souttar Rangers ploy

It would be unfair, and wrong, to lay all Rangers’ current woes squarely at the feed of head coach Philippe Clement, the issues run far deeper than the dugout and everyone knows that.

By the same token, the Belgian can be completely exonerated of blame for the absolute mess the Light Blues find themselves in and it was another underwhelming display against United on Saturday.

The decision to just stick Souttar up top absolutely stank of desperation, a chaos-theory tactic, a Hail Mary, just something that went against the grain.

But the truth of the matter is, Clement had way better tactical options he could have deployed to try and find a much-needed winner and it was just a bit baffling as to why he chose the option he did.

With an 11-point gap now to leaders Celtic, it is just looking increasingly bleak. The best they can hope for is to claw back Aberdeen in second now, surely.

In other Rangers news, one ace has been told to quit Ibrox in January.
