Peter Grant has told Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie he “has to go and play” amid recent links with a summer transfer to Aberdeen.

The 26-year-old has been unable to force his way into Philippe Clement’s plans at Ibrox and has reportedly turned down a new deal in Glasgow having submitted a transfer request in the January window [Rangers Review, 4 June].

One team McCrorie has been linked with is Premiership rivals Aberdeen [Daily Record, 24 May] and while BBC pundit Grant admits the Scotsman has never let the Light Blues down, he has urged him to leave Ibrox this summer.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (5 June, 17:00) he said: “Absolutely. I just think he has to go and play. I thought at the time when he went to Livingston and did ever so well the first time, that it was a mistake unless he was going back to Rangers.

“I felt as a young man, and I know it’s easy for me to say and it is Rangers you’re talking about and that’s the club he supported. He’s never let Rangers down, but I think he’s got to go out there now and play and try to be a number one somewhere.”

Will Philippe Clement and Rangers sell Robby McCrorie during the summer transfer window?

While McCrorie may never have let the Gers down, it is clear that Clement simply doesn’t view the Scottish stopper as a number one, especially while Jack Butland remains in place between the Ibrox posts.

The Englishman has barely put a foot wrong in a Gers shirt following his move north of the border last summer and unless a big offer arrives for him this summer, he will still be Clement’s first-choice keeper when the new season rolls around.

Jack Butland, Rangers
Jack Butland has been a revelation for Rangers since arriving at Ibrox

At 26, McCrorie simply has to be playing regular first-team football. That just isn’t ever going to be the case for Rangers and it would be best for everyone involved if he completed a move away sooner rather than later.

The Light Blues could reinvest any incoming fee back into Clement’s summer rebuild and they would also save on wages. While a new keeper would then be high on the priority list, it wouldn’t be an expensive deal to complete.
