'Gut-wrenching' - Sam Allardyce defends Farhad Moshiri after Everton takeover news

Sam Allardyce has been saddened by the financial situation at Everton as Farhad Moshiri searches for a new owner.

The current owner of the Toffees, who fans have a very mixed opinion about at Goodison Park, bought a 49.9 per cent stake in the club before increasing his shares to 94.1 per cent in 2022 [Liverpool Echo].

Now, Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor has been in talks to buy Moshiri’s majority stake at Goodison Park, with the businessman possibly willing to sell his share at Selhurst Park at a discounted price to accelerate a deal [The Guardian].

Speaking via the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast on Thursday (22 August), Allardyce said: “The fact that the club needs to be sold… I know Farhad [Moshiri] really well – I’ve got great respect for him.

“The difficult journey he’s had and the amount of money he’s probably going to lose out on is particularly gut-wrenching. He’s also built the new stadium, so he’s done everything right that he possibly can but his choices between me and all the other managers have not come to fruition.

“So, with the financial side now, it’s a real struggle for Everton.”

Having been manager of the club between November 2017 and May 2018, Allardyce will have gotten to know Moshiri on a more personal level, more than the fans at Goodison Park have.

The owner is usually a disliked figure, but with Everton never having dropped out of the Premier League despite several relegation battles, it is understandable to see the respect for him.

The club is clearly a very changed one since Allardyce’s time in charge, especially with the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium nearing its completion, though this has added a lot of debt.

The Friedkin Group are now owed £200million after their investment earlier this summer, even despite their collapsed takeover attempt, and it is understood that the debt must be repaid before a change of ownership is made [Liverpool Echo].

While Allardyce has voiced his respect for the job done by Moshiri over the years, fans are just desperate to know that their club is going to survive in the Premier League, with little signs of hope over the last year.

In other Everton news, Sam Allardyce has warned Sean Dyche over a problem at Goodison Park after what he witnessed recently.
