Harry Maguire issues update on his Manchester United future amid contract uncertainty
The defender is nearing the end of his current contract.
Harry Maguire says there has been ‘positive chat’ over a new Manchester United contract, as his current deal nears an end.
The centre-back has had a turbulent time at Old Trafford since making the £80m move from Leicester City in 2019.
Things started well for Maguire with the Red Devils, quickly being made captain by then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but struggles set in and he was in and out of the team under Erik ten Hag.
New manager Ruben Amorim appears to have the 31-year-old in his plans as he beds in his 3-4-3 formation, playing Maguire from the start in the 2-1 win at Manchester City on Sunday.
Maguire’s current deal expires at the end of the season, although the club has an option to extend it by a further year.
The England international says he has not been thinking much about his future beyond the current campaign, but there have been talks and they have pointed towards him staying with the Red Devils.
‘I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands,’ he said.
‘But all the signs are positive at the moment and the chat that I’m having is really positive.’
Maguire has had injuries so far this season, most notably a hamstring problem which kept him out for most of October and November.
However, he is back and played well in the Manchester derby, enjoying his role in the new system under Amorim.
‘I’ve played in a back three numerous times in my career — generally played on the left, but obviously I’m playing in the middle at the moment,’ he said.
‘It feels good, we feel solid. I’ve just got to buy myself a bit of time and they’re looking after my minutes, because I haven’t been able to play back-to-back games yet.
‘But to get 90 minutes under my belt for the first time in two, three months, it feels good.’
The hero of the Manchester derby for United, Amad Diallo, is in the same contractual situation as Maguire, with his deal expiring in the summer and the club holding an option for another year.
There is no doubt that the Red Devils want to keep hold of the in-form youngster, with talks ongoing over a new contract for the 22-year-old.
