Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp reckons that Alexander Isak is a better striker than Erling Haaland.

Haaland has lit up the league since arriving in 2022 from Borussia Dortmund, scoring 36 and 27 goals respectively in his first two campaigns.

The Norwegian already has 13 goals so far this season but has scored just once in his last five games as City’s results have started to slide.

By contrast, Isak is in a rich vein of goalscoring form, with six goals in his last eight league games, including in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Leicester City.

And Redknapp believes that, given such form, the Swede may well be the best forward in the league.

‘Alexander Isak a such a top, top striker,’ the 77-year-old told BetVictor as he reviewed last weekend’s Premier League action.

‘He got one and created another against Leicester, and he could have had three or four.

‘I think right now, he’s probably the best striker in the Premier League.’

Despite having a contract with Newcastle until 2028, Isak’s consistent level of performance has seen the forward consistently linked with a move away from St James’ Park.

Arsenal have been mooted as a club that could make a move for the 25-year-old, with former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson surprised that the club didn’t try to sign him in the summer.

‘I’m a big fan of this lad,’ Merson told Sky Sports ‘I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t try and break the bank for him over the summer, I think he was the missing link for Arsenal.

‘I think he can do everything, he can come short, he gets in the box, he can spread the game.

‘That’s what Arsenal need, you need to spread the game so you can get players like Odegaard and Saka on the ball.

‘At the moment Arsenal are a bit congested, they haven’t got a player like Isak. I’m a fan, I’m a really big fan.’
