‘His numbers aren’t what they should be’: Chris Sutton says £45m Arsenal player should score so many more goals

Arsenal may sit third in the Premier League, but they aren’t in the best of form right now.

Indeed, the Gunners have just suffered their first league defeat of the season against Bournemouth, and they have dropped points in three of their last six league matches.

Of course, Arsenal’s ongoing injury and suspension crisis isn’t helping matters, but, there is that underlying feeling that Arsenal do still need a striker.

Arsenal looked at signing a new striker in the summer. Benjamin Sesko was a concrete target for Arsenal, while Mikel Arteta also looked at Alexander Isak.

Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off, Chris Sutton has been discussing Arsenal’s striking situation, and he says that Gabriel Jesus is a player who should be providing a lot more to this team.

Gabriel Jesus should score more

Sutton shared his verdict on the £45m man.

The pundit claimed that Jesus isn’t a natural finisher and he never has been, but he does a lot of good things on the pitch, and he just needs to be slightly more composed.

“Well, he feels in Havertz and Trossard, who both played up top the other evening against Shakhtar Donetsk, that he has enough in those areas,” Sutton said.

“But you’re right about Jesus. His numbers aren’t what they should be. He’s not a natural finisher.

“I don’t think he ever has been. He does so many good things, Mike. He played off the right wing against Shakhtar and he does so many good things. But when a chance fell to him just before half time, six yards out, goalkeeper to beat, he fluffed his lines.”

How is Jesus doing in Arsenal training?

It must be so frustrating for Mikel Arteta to see Gabriel Jesus failing to produce when it matters, because, by all accounts, he’s incredible in training.

Arteta said that Jesus was fantastic during pre-season, while Declan Rice named Jesus as the best trainer at the club a few months ago.

Unfortunately, those performances in training aren’t translating into on-field contributions, and that may be down to confidence.

Jesus has had a difficult 18 months, he’s suffered with numerous injuries, and he’s lost his place in the starting XI to Kai Havertz.

Unfortunately, that may have led to a bit of a crisis in confidence, and that is affecting his form.

Ian Wright recently implored Arsenal fans to stand by Jesus, and that may be the best course of action, because when the Brazilian is feeling confident and playing well, he’s one of the better attacking outlets in the Premier League.
