Cammy Bell says Hamza Igamane remains a “huge” player for Rangers in their slim hopes of chasing down Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers put up a good fight against their fierce rivals in the Scottish League Cup final, with the Morocco international once again getting the nod to lead Philippe Clement’s attacking line.
Sunday’s game (15 December) was end-to-end throughout but, while there were positives to come away with, it ultimately ended in penalty heartache at Hampden after a 3-3 draw at the end of 120 minutes.
Although Igamane didn’t manage to get his name on the scoresheet during the final, BBC pundit Bell still believes he’s an important player for the club and could be pivotal to their title chances this season.
“The front four are really good for me, they’re working really well together,” he said. “[Ianis] Hagi coming in, obviously Igamane is a huge player at this moment in time.
“Keep these guys fit, keep the positivity around the club and just keep moving forward and winning games of football, that’s all Rangers can do.
“All they can do is hang onto the hope that Celtic can drop some points at some point and they can take advantage of that.”
Rangers need to put the Celtic defeat behind them
This season, it’s felt like Rangers have constantly been on the back foot and they currently sit third in the league behind title rivals Aberdeen and Celtic.
While the gap to the Bhoys is still rather large, there’s now only a two-point cushion that separates Clement’s men from second place in the table.
Granted, this is mostly down to Jimmy Thelin’s men dropping off recently and the Gers picking up their form across all competitions, but at the moment, the title still seems quite a distance away.
Prior to their loss in the final against Brendan Rodgers’ men, Rangers had some solid momentum behind them and were in a more than impressive run of form.
As long as they don’t let their defeat to Celtic hinder them and affect the way they play, as well as keeping players such as Igamane and Hagi fit, they could end up making a late title charge.
There are plenty of ifs and buts, of course, but stranger things have happened. All eyes now turn to the next Old Firm, this time in the league, in early 2025.
